I remember the little game we used to play when you were young—the
bowl full of cherries. I see that bowl now as a gift from God. Each of us
receives one, filled with sweet cherries, sour ones, and plenty with
pits. The cherries represent life—its joys, its challenges, and the hard
moments. The pits are the difficulties we face, and how we handle
them helps us stay humble and focused on Jesus.
I believe the hardest thing in life is staying humble, because pride
comes so naturally. But this bowl of cherries—this life—is God’s way of
helping us learn humility through the ups and downs.
As you move forward, I know many sweet moments await you. And
when you come across the sour or bitter ones, or hit a pit, just keep
your eyes on Jesus and walk humbly, as you already are. These are just
a few thoughts from your old, unworthy dad who loves you deeply. I’m
thankful—rather than proud—for what God is doing in you. You’ve
impacted me more than you know, and I believe your mom is being
moved too, in her own time.
I’m writing all this on the back of a little card, hoping it encourages
you as you begin your next step as a Carmelite sister with the black
veil.
Praise be Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.
